How to Make a Planter Out of an Old Wooden Chair

Save

Old wooden chairs with the center of the seats missing or removed can make ideal planters for the home garden. Not only will this recycle old furniture, but also it will add a colorful accent to the garden.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire cutters
  • Chicken wire
  • Nails or strong tacks
  • Burlap or sphagnum moss
  • Soil
  • Plants
  • Pull out the center of the seat, if it's not already removed. Make sure there are no stray bits of wicker and that the wood on the seat is clean and ready to work with.

  • Measure the hole in the seat and consider how much extra material you would need to make a bowl shaped chicken wire piece for the center of the chair.

  • Cut the material and shape it into a bowl that will fit into the center of the wooden chair.

  • Wrap the edges of the chicken wire around what is left of the seat frame, and use nails or strong tacks to hold it in place.

  • Line the chicken wire with sphagnum moss or burlap. Make it thick enough that soil will not fall through.

  • Add soil to the new chair seat container.

  • Plant your flowers or herbs.
