Steam Asparagus in the Microwave Tutorial

Save

I love asparagus. Not only is it delicious and versatile, but it's one of the easiest and fastest vegetables to prepare. While I prefer many of my favorite veggies roasted, caramelized and crunchy, asparagus shines when steamed and tossed with a light coating of olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. This allows its natural flavors to shine through (you can even omit the lemon juice). Scrambling to throw together a last minute meal? No problem. This is a fast and foolproof technique that's ready in less than 5 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 pound asparagus
  • Water
  • Paper towels

Step 1: Gather your ingredients and tools.

You need almost nothing to prepare the asparagus. A knife and cutting board will help, but many people prefer to break off the tough ends by hand. This is a personal preference.

Step 2: Remove tough ends from asparagus.

Wash the asparagus. Remove and discard the tough ends, either using a knife and cutting board or by hand.

Step 3: Wrap in damp paper towels.

Dampen several sheets of paper towels with water, enough to cover the asparagus lengthwise. Wrap around the asparagus, tucking under the ends like a burrito. You want to create an enclosed steam area. Place seam-side down on a microwave-safe plate.

Step 4: Microwave for 3 to 4 minutes.

Microwave for 3 to 4 minutes, until the asparagus is bright green and crisp-tender. Remove the plate from the microwave and carefully unwrap (watch out for the hot steam).

The asparagus is ready to serve! Toss with some olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper, or your favorite dressing.
