      Make him set the date

Set the date, time, and location of the wedding and reception. If you have set the date, but have not yet picked a location, consider using a "Save the Date" card, but be aware just because you have sent such a card, the recipient is not obligated to attend the wedding. Decide if you are going to invite all guests to both the wedding and reception, or just one or the other.

Decide who will be the designated announcer on the wedding invitations. Typically, this will be the person or persons hosting the wedding; in the past usually the parents of the bride. Adapt this to your own unique situation. If both the bride and groom's parents are sharing expenses, by all means include them all. Some couples prefer to announce their own wedding while others who have children will list them in the announcement portion. Remember to consider other people's feelings, but this is your day, so pick the people that feel right to you.

Don't forget RSVP info - your caterer will want to know how many to feed

How do you want your guests to RSVP? Traditionally, a card for that purpose was included with the wedding invitation, but with the current focus on living green, you may want to opt for RSVP via phone or email. That information should be included.

Some couples choose to provide information about gift giving and registries on their wedding invitations. Etiquette experts frown upon this, but the choice is yours.

Decide if you want the wedding invitation wording to be casual or formal. This choice should be the same as the type of wedding you are having. If you are getting married out of doors and your reception will be a pitch in picnic, go casual. If you have 10 bridesmaids and your wedding dress has a train 10 yards long, formal is your best choice. Some sites giving examples of the different styles of wording are included in the Resource section.

Use pictures and words to illustrate your invitation

Whether you are printing your own invitations on your home PC or using a printing service, you can choose special elements for your invitation. You can google pictures and graphics or look at what your printer has available. You can find many wedding invitations online to get other ideas. Besides graphics, you can show your personality with a quote or poem that is meaningful to you or your fiancé, or include the lyrics of your song. Better yet, compose something yourself; there is no one that can express your feelings better then you can.

      Don't forget to mail them!

Once you have all the elements, pull them together. If you are using a card format, put your graphic and special poem, song, quote, etc. on the front of the card, and put the Who, What, When, and Where inside. Want to dress it up even more? Add a pretty ribbon in one of your wedding colors. Sketch it out on paper to take with you when you visit the printing company or tape it above your computer while you create your own wedding invitation in your favorite graphics program. Once you have the printed invitations in your hands, mail them out at least 30 days before the big date. Congratulations! Your awesome personally created wedding invitations have just brought you closer to the happiest day of your life!

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose a theme for your wedding invitations that reflects your love story.

  • Figure the cost for printing the invitations on your computer printer. Call your local printing companies for prices, and check for deals online. DIY is not always the most economical choice.

  • Search for free wedding invitations online.

  • Wedding preparations are often stressful. Be on guard not to let disagreements over invitations escalate into something more serious. In the end, the wedding invitations are just paper, is you and your beloved that count.
