Instructions

  1. Sew Rick Rack to the Top of Fabric

    • 1

Determine the position desired for the rick rack. If using rick rack as an edging, place the rick rack along the edge of the fabric and use a ruler to make sure that the rick rack is even.

    • 2

Use a fabric glue stick to fix the rick rack to the fabric in the desired position. If the edges will be exposed, turn under the raw ends of the rick rack on both ends to prevent the raw edges from fraying.

    • 3

Stitch by hand or sew a narrow zigzag stitch by machine down the center of the rick rack.

    • 4

Stop stitching at the end of the rick rack and secure the stitches by back stitching two stitches. Make certain the ends of the rick rack are turned under and stitched. Clip the threads to finish.

    Insert Rick Rack Into Seams

    • 5

Lay the fabric flat on a work surface with the right side facing up. Determine where the seam line will be by placing the pattern piece over the fabric. Mark the seam line with a fabric pen.

    • 6

Place the rick rack along the seam line of the fabric with half of the rick rack on one side of the seam line and the other half of the rick rack on the other side of the seam line. Affix the rick rack to the seam line with the fabric glue stick.

    • 7

Stitch the rick rack in place along the seam line with a basting stitch. Sew the basting line just slightly to the inside of the seam line to ensure that the basting stitching will not be visible when the seam is sewn.

    • 8

Place the fabric pieces right sides together, sandwiching the rick rack between the fabric pieces. Match the edges and corners.

    • 9

Stitch the two fabrics together along the seam line. Half of the rick rack will be visible on the right sides of the fabric extending out from the seam. After sewing, fold the fabric pieces along the seam. This will expose the rick rack extending out from the sewn seam.
