How to Bake Birthday Cakes


Birthdays are fun times of year, especially for kids. Take the time to make a homemade birthday cake for your best friend, favorite grandchild or neighbor. In a little over half an hour, you can bake a delicious yellow cake with scrumptious frosting and custom-designed decorations. The extra time and effort make the gift a special one.

Things You'll Need

  • Margarine Sugar Eggs Vanilla Salt Baking powder Flour Skim milk 9-inch cake pans Frosting Sprinkles or candies (optional)
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  • Mix 3/4 cup margarine and 1 1/2 cups sugar in large bowl until light and fluffy.

  • Add 3 medium eggs, 2 tsp. vanilla and 1 tsp. salt. Mix well.

  • Add 3 tsp. baking powder 3 cups flour and 1 1/4 cups skim milk. Beat everything well---with electric beaters, if possible, for about 2 minutes. The mixture should look smooth and creamy.

  • Oil two 9-inch layer cake pans.

  • Pour cake batter into both pans and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.

  • Let cakes cool completely.

  • Remove the cakes from the pans and spread frosting thickly on top of one cake. Stack the cakes on top of each other.

  • Fully frost the sides and top of both cake layers. Frost gently.

  • Decorate cake with sprinkles, candies or special frosting for writing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get the kids involved with decorating the cake. Let them go nuts with anything colorful, such as M&Ms, Skittles or gummy bears.
