A black & white party is an event theme famously popularized by novelist Truman Capote in 1966. Capote hosted his Black & White Ball in New York's renowned Plaza Hotel and invited noteworthy guests including socialites and celebrities. Today, black & white parties are a common and much-loved theme for all types of occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. Choose a simple location that can be decorated in black and white colors with minimal effort. For example, pick a private residence or hall with white walls and white carpeting that will lend itself well to a transformation requiring only a few small changes.

Send out invitations specifying the theme. Make sure your guests understand that they must wear black or white or a combination of the two colors to the party. Invitations should be black and white as well.

Put up black and white balloons, streamers, banners or curtains. Alternate table covers in black and white, and choose appropriate china. Use white flowers in a black vase, or painted black flowers in a white vase, as the centerpiece on each table.

Place large black and white tiles onto the dance floor to create a chessboard appearance. Roll out a black and white carpet at the entrance.

Isolate an area of the party space where people can get their photos taken in black and white film. If possible, film the event in black and white and give out copies of the video/dvd as party favors.

Serve as much black and white food as is feasible. A chocolate cake with white frosting, vanilla and chocolate ice cream swirls, Oreo cookies, milkshakes, Hostess cupcakes, blackberries, raisins, sushi and cheese sticks are a few good ideas.

Tips & Warnings
Have a few extra pieces of black and white clothing on hand. If some guests arrive dressed inappropriately, offer them clothes to change into.
Don't allow guests who aren't dressed correctly in to the party. Your theme will be ruined if you let in too many people in colorful outfits.
