Worked in fingering weight yarn, this delicate capelet is the perfect touch on a cool summer evening. Choose a superwash wool for a more practical and casual capelet or a fine silk and mohair blend for a more delicate knit capelet. Since this capelet is worked from the top down, you can add additional increases if needed for the fit and drape you prefer.
Things You'll Need
- Fingering weight yarn, approximately 450 yards
- Size 10-1/2 circular needle, 24 inches in length
- Stitch markers
How to Knit a Capelet
Cast on 80 stitches and join to work in the round. Place stitch marker to note the start of the round. Work 10 rounds, knitting all stitches.
Knit eight, make one and repeat this pattern to the end of the row on the next round to increase your capelet pattern. You should now have 90 stitches on your needle. Knit one round even.
Wrap the yarn twice around the needle as you knit each stitch of the following row. You are creating a yarn over with each stitch. Knit only one of these two loops on the next row, dropping the yarn overs to create a lacy, drop-stitch capelet pattern (see References 1). Knit 10 rounds even.
Increase on the next round by working in a "knit nine, make one" pattern. Knit one round even. Repeat the drop-stitch pattern by wrapping the yarn twice around the needle on the following row. Knit into the the first loop of each wrap on the next row.
Knit 10 rows, then repeat the two row drop-stitch pattern three more times. Knit 10 more rows and bind off loosely. Block the capelet to open up the drop stitches.
