There are many ways to cook bluegills to create a tasty meal. Bluegills are smaller fish, but after you have them cleaned and filleted, you can cook them in a deep fryer, broil them in the oven or make them into a casserole. To make the perfect fish dinner, you need only a few other ingredients. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Broiled Bluegill

    • 1

      Turn on the broiler. Rinse each bluegill fillet in cold water. Dry by patting with a paper towel.

      Dip each fillet into Italian dressing and place in a casserole dish or a cake pan with 2-inch sides.

      Place the pan about 5 inches from the broiler flame and broil for 5 minutes or until the fish is done.

    Deep-Fried Bluegill

      Preheat deep fryer to 370 degrees.

      Combine 6 oz. milk, 2 tsp. salt, 1 egg and 1 tsp. pepper in a mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly. Slowly add 1 cup of flour to the mixture and mix until smooth. Set aside.

      Mix 1 cup of cracker crumbs and ½ cup of corn flakes in a small mixing bowl. Set aside.

      Wash fish in cold water and dry with paper towels. Dip fillets in batter, then in the cracker crumb mixture, and drop into the preheated deep fryer. Fry for 4 minutes or until golden brown.

      Remove from the deep fryer and place on a paper towel to drain.

    Bluegill Casserole

      Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

      Heat 3 tbsp. butter in a large frying pan. Add 4 cups of bluegill fillets and cook 5 minutes on each side. Add some water, cover, and simmer for 5 minutes more. Drain and set aside.

      Combine 1 cup soft bread crumbs, 3 tbsp. parsley, salt and pepper to taste, 2 tbsp. lemon juice, one 10-ounce can of celery soup, 5 oz. milk, 1 stick melted butter and 2 tbsp. grated onion in a large bowl. Add 1 tsp. dry mustard, 1 tbsp. chopped pimientos, 3 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce, 1 chopped green pepper and 6 oz. of creamed corn. Mix well.

      Add the fish and slightly fold into the mixture. Put the mixture into a buttered casserole dish and top with 1 cup grated mild cheddar cheese and 1½ cups of crushed corn flakes.

      Cover and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the cover and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese turns a golden brown.
