If you are looking to save money, but without sacrificing the look and smell of your clothing, then why not make your own Laundry Detergent? You can make your own powder laundry soap or detergent from your home with just a few simple ingredients.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Borax
  • Washing Soda
  • Fels Naptha
  • Bar Soap (Your Favorite Scent)
  • Cheese Grater
  • Any Container with Lid
  1. Step 1

First you will want to make sure you have the four key ingredients. The Borax, Fels Naptha and Washing Soda can all be found in one section together on the laundry aisle of your local grocery store or supermarket. They are usually towards the opposite end of the other detergents or laundry soaps. The Fels Naptha is a Bar Soap and the other Borax and Washing Soda (made by Arm & Hammer) will be in a box.

  2. Step 2

Measure 1 Cup of Borax and 1 Cup of Washing Soda. Combine together.

  3. Step 3

Grate the Fels Naptha soap until you have 2 Cups. Grate it with the smallest/finest grate. Combine this with the Borax and Washing Soda combination from above.

  4. Step 4

Grate your own choice bar soap (Example: Dove, Zest, Ivory until you have 1-2 Cups, depending on how fragrant you prefer your laundry. You will want to have this grated very fine as well. Now combine this soap with the previous combination of Steps two and three.

  5. Step 5

Mix the above combination until well blended and store in an air tight container.

  6. Step 6

Use approximately two Tablespoons of your Powdered Homemade Laundry Detergent with each load of clothes or laundry you wash.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have well water you may want to use three tablespoons of detergent

on 7/13/2009 Great article. I can sadly never find the washing soda at any of the grocery stores near me. I did check into ordering it once but it was very expensive at the time. I will have to look again since I have recently moved. Perhaps there will be washing soda here at my new local.
