How to Cook With Parchment Paper

Parchment paper is not the same as wax paper. Parchment has been coated with silicone in order to make it more heat resistant. That means that you can cook with it in the oven. By using parchment paper, your food will not stick to the paper or the pan, so you do not need to add any additional fat or oil to your bakeware. Use parchment instead of oil to cut down on calories while still having delicious food. The most common way to cook with parchment paper is called "en papillote." That French term literally means "in paper", and you will find that it lends itself very well to most dishes, especially fish and very lean meats.

Things You'll Need

  • Parchment paper Scissors Baking sheet or pan Oven recipe
  • Examine your recipe and the size food you will be cooking. You can divide the food into individual servings and prepare separate pouches if desired.

  • Preheat the oven as directed in the recipe and prepare the food up to the point you will put it into the baking dish.

  • Cut the parchment paper into a large heart shape 2 1/2 times larger than the amount of food to be put into the packet.

  • Place the food onto one half of the heart shape.

  • Fold the heart in half so that the food is covered.

  • Roll up the edges all around the heart where the two halves meet. This will help to seal in the flavor and help the food to cook.

  • Place the packet onto the baking sheet and bake in the oven as directed by the recipe.

  • Alternately, line a baking dish with a sheet of parchment paper cut to fit the inside of the dish. That will prevent food from sticking to the inside of the dish. Bake as directed in your recipe.
