Make a Loofah

Many people are surprised to learn that loofah sponges (also spelled luffa and lufah) are not aquatic, but vegetable. Unlike the more commonly known sea sponge, loofah is actually a gourd in the same family of plants as pumpkins and cucumbers. When harvested before fully ripening, the loofah can be used in certain African and Asian dishes. When allowed to fully ripen and dry, the loofah can be transformed into an exfoliating sponge. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a sunny location where the loofah vines will also have something strong to climb on, such as a fence, trellis or tomato cage. The mature fruits can grow as long as 18 inches and weigh up to 5 lb.

    • 2
      Potting soil mixed with compost.

Plant the seeds 3/4 to 1 inch deep in rich soil, and cover with compost. If your growing season is short, start the seeds inside until the danger of frost has passed, then transplant them outside.

    • 3

Water the plants every day until the root systems are well established, then weekly. If you notice the leaves wilting, water a bit more frequently.

    • 4

Fertilize with compost when the first flowers appear. Some gardeners recommend removing the first round of flowers in order to obtain a higher-quality crop.

Harvest the gourds when they have turned a dark yellow or brownish color. It will take several months to reach this stage.

    • 6

Soak the gourds in order to soften the outer skin. When it becomes pliable enough, peel it off and remove all of the seeds. If you have difficulty removing the seeds, try removing them after step 7.

    • 7

Lay the gourds out in the sun to dry, or air-dry them inside, turning them over every hour or so, as water will settle in the lower part of the gourd. When dry, your loofah is ready to use.
