How to Remove Rust (the Easy, Green, and Almost Free Method)

Cleaning up the house or patio for summer time entertaining may not be everyone’s favorite chore, but here’s a fast way to remove rust from chrome. And it’s free – well, almost, it takes less than 3 cents worth of aluminum foil. That's all -- no solvents, no fumes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • rusty chrome
  • aluminum foil
  1. Step 1
    Indoors or out -- rust builds.

    Find the rusty areas on your patio furniture or other chrome items in your home.

  2. Step 2
    Just an average size piece of foil.

    Tear off a medium-size sheet of aluminum foil. About 8" x 11" is a good size to start -- the size of a piece of printer paper.

  3. Step 3
    Crumple it up  -- but not too much.

    Crumple foil into a ball, leaving some air pockets and work surface.

    A quick scrub.

    Rub foil over rusty chrome until all rust is gone! It only takes a few minutes and not too much 'elbow grease'.

    Step back and admire your handwork. Now it’s time to fold up that chair and head to the beach, a picnic, softball game or your favorite summer activity.

Tips & Warnings
  • Depending upon the item, you may be able to prevent future rust with a preventive spray or coating after a thorough cleaning.
  • You can recycle the aluminum foil when you're done!
  • Test on an inconspicuous rusty area of the chrome first.
  • No need to scrub aggressively. You just want to remove the rust; not the chrome finish.
