Things You'll Need:
- One pair of single point, 10 inch, size 10 knitting needles.
- Any bulky yarn, though I prefer Bernat Chunky Yarn.
-
Step 1
Start by casting on 20 stitches of your chunky yarn.
-
Step 2
Now you will start your pattern. The entire first row will be made up by knitting 5, pearling 5, knitting 5, pearling 5. After this row, switch your needles and then you will complete the mirror image of the first row by pearling 5, knitting 5, pearling 5, knitting 5.
-
Step 3
Row three goes back to knitting 5, pearling 5, knitting 5, pearling 5. Row four is pearling 5, knitting 5, pearling 5, knitting 5. Once you have completed the first four rows, you have made your first row of the checkerboard.
-
Step 4
Now to start your next checkerboard row, you will start by pearling 5, knitting 5, pearling 5, knitting 5, on row 5.
-
Step 5
You will always switch your stitch every five rows so for the rest of the rows, I will just tell the starting stitch. Row 6 then starts with knitting. Row 7 starts with pearling. Row 8 starts with knitting. Once done with 8 rows, you can see your second checkerboard row.
-
Step 6
Now you will just repeat the pattern of the first 8 rows for the rest of the scarf. The length of the scarf is up to you. When you are ready to cast off, work down to the third row within a checkerboard row and then cast off on the fourth and final row.
