How to Design a Birthday Cake Online
If you want to go beyond ordering the standard white sheet cake at your local grocery store and having a message scribbled on top, you can design a birthday cake yourself using online tools. A custom birthday cake is the best way to add a little something extra to a birthday party, and it's a thoughtful idea for a kid's backyard party or an "over-the-hill" themed event. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions

1
Go to FergusonPlarre.com or another site that has a "design-a-cake" program built in (see a direct link in References).
-
2
Start by choosing the type of cake you want, such as a sponge, angel food or regular cake. Decide on the flavor for your cake. If the cake-designing program does not have the exact options you need, just select one and tell the bakery your specific choice later. Also, decide if you want a special filling for your birthday cake or the basic frosting.
-
-
3
Decide the shape (round, rectangular or square) and size of the cake. Most birthday cakes come in sizes ranging from 8 to 16 inches wide.
-
4
Choose a color for the cake to go with your party theme.
-
5
Select a design for the top of the birthday cake. You can upload your own photo (or image text) or choose one of the predesigned options. If you don't want any image, just upload a blank white image to be displayed on top. Make sure that your design contrasts well against the general cake color you chose in Step 4.
-
6
Enter a custom "happy birthday" message for the top of the cake. You can also choose not to have any text written on the cake.
-
7
View your cake and verify that it is to your liking. Tweak and change the options, as necessary. When you're happy, you can either order the birthday cake from the online provider or print the cake design on your computer and bring it into a local cake shop for production.

Tips & Warnings
If you want trim and other special features not offered by the online design-a-cake program, just print the basic design and write your additional instructions on the page.
You can also order a program online to create your cake at WeddingCakeDesignPro.com (this is best if you need a more complex and intricate or layered cake design).
