Stocking caps are quite useful on cold days for keeping the head warm, and even on warmer days they can make a fashion statement. With just a bit of yarn, a hook and some time, crocheting a stocking cap can be easy and fun. Crochet stocking caps are great gifts and can also be made for a variety of charities.

Things You'll Need

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook, size as recommended on yarn packaging
  • Tape measure or head model for gauging the crown size
  • Tapestry Needle

Instructions

    • 1

Make a slip knot. Chain 4. Slip stitch into first chain to create a small ring. This is the top of the stocking cap.
Chain 1, and single crochet into the ring 11 times. Slip stitch into the chain. This is Row 1.

    • 2

Chain 1, single crochet into same stitch as chain 1, and then 2 single crochets in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch. This is Row 2.

    • 3

Chain 1, single crochet into same stitch as chain 1, single crochet into next stitch--*2 single crochets in next stitch, and then single crochet in the following stitch. Repeat from * around. This is Row 3.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3, increasing the number of single stitches between the 2 single crochets in 1 stitch. For example, Row 4 will have 2 single crochets in a stitch followed by a single crochet in the next 2 stitches, then 2 single crochets in the following stitch.
Row 5 will have 2 single crochets in a stitch followed by a single crochet in the next 3 stitches, then 2 single crochets in the following stitch, and so on.

    • 5

Once the circle has been made large enough for the crown of the head, stop increasing and single crochet in each stitch around for several rows until the hat's brim is to your liking. You can find head size charts at Bev's Country Cottage to gauge the correct size (see link in References).

Finish by pulling the yarn through the last stitch. Using a tapestry needle, weave in the ends from the beginning and end of the hat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a stitch marker to mark where your rows begin to make increasing with each row easier. Crocheted fabric has some give to it and can be stretched somewhat to fit. Add a pom-pom to the top of the hat for a little extra pizzazz.
