How to Stipple a Ceiling

Textured ceilings provide soundproofing and visual interest. Stippling refers to tapping lightly with a special brush to create a textured effect. Whether you are repairing a ceiling or painting a brand new surface, there are a few techniques that you'll need to know in order to stipple a ceiling.

• Ceiling mud
• Drill with mixer attachment
• Stipple brush

Instructions

1. Prepare the ceiling by applying a base coat of paint in your desired color. While you can use any flat paint, ceiling paint, which is tinted until it dries, makes the job easier and helps you avoid any missed spots. Allow the ceiling at least 48 hours to dry before proceeding to the next step.

2. Mix your ceiling mud thoroughly. In order to get the texture you want for your stippled ceiling, it is best to use a product specially made for ceilings, available from any hardware store. It will be thick and difficult to work with at first. Use the drill and mixing attachment to mix the mud until it is smoother.

3. Make a small sample board before you tackle the ceiling. Stippling is not difficult, but in order to get a uniform pattern, it is best to use a practice surface to get your technique down.

4. Stipple the practice board using a round stipple brush and light strokes. Gently dab the ceiling mud on with brief taps. If the texture is too thick, scrape off the mud with a palette knife and start over.

5. Start on the ceiling. Using a sturdy ladder or scaffolding, use the same technique on your ceiling. It is best to divide the work up into squares of approximately one foot square. This will help you get a uniform texture throughout the entire ceiling. If you make a mistake, just scrape it off and try again.
