How to Make a Slipcover for a Sofabed

Slipcovers are a good addition to any of the furniture within a household, especially sofabeds since those are used quite often. Not only does it help prolong the life of your sofabed, it may provide a creative personal touch to your furniture. Choose wisely when looking for fabric for the sofabed slipcover. Stay away from light colors, especially if you have children or pets because they stain so easily. If you have animals that shed a lot, shy away from very dark colors because the stray hairs will be very apparent. Patterns are a good way to go for slipcovers.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your sofabed. This step is important because you need to understand every angle and curve of the sofabed. Write down the measurements so you do not forget. If your sofa already has a slipcover that you are replacing, remove it carefully, making sure to keep the fabric aside so if you need a reference for the new slipcover you have it close by.

    • 2

Purchase your slipcover fabric. Buy more than your necessary measurements in case you need more fabric because of a cutting mistake, or if you want to re-do your slipcover or apply it to other furniture.

    • 3

Drape the fabric over the highest end of the sofabed, which is usually the high back. Lay the fabric so there is equal amounts of fabric on either side of the sofabed. If a lot of excess fabric hangs over, trim it to size but allow a 1.5 inch hem on the fabric. Next, pin the edges of the fabric around the curves and edges of the sofabed.

    • 4

Sew the slipcover for the sofabed together after you have pinned it up. Sew the hems in the location of the fabric pins, removing them as you go along. Although the slipcover will be a little loose, tighten it up as you sew to get at least a snug fit around the edges and angles.

Tuck under any stray edges when you are done. Go over your work one more time and sew up extra edges and cut away stray threads, etc.
