The Jeep XJ is an off-road vehicle built for any terrain. Part of the reason that the XJ is so well built for off-road adventures is because of its well-proportioned cooling system. A component of the cooling system is a radiator fan that helps move more air over the fins of the radiator in an effort to more efficiently cool down the radiator fluid. If the radiator fan goes bad then the cooling system does not work as efficiently and you risk damage to your engine. Changing out a radiator fan in the Jeep XJ is a relatively straightforward and easy process.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Pop the hood of the XJ and prop it open with plenty of room to move around and work inside the engine compartment.

  2. Step 2

Locate the fan on the end of the spindle that is driven by the serpentine belt on the engine. There is a small set screw on the shaft of fan that you will need to unscrew slightly to release the fan from the shaft.

  3. Step 3

Slide the fan off of the shaft and discard it.

  4. Step 4

Slide the new fan onto the shaft and use the Allen wrenches to tighten down the set screw.

  5. Step 5

Turn the car on and make sure the fan has plenty of clearance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wait at least 30 minutes after driving before performing this procedure as the engine and/or radiator could still be hot enough to burn you otherwise.
