Vintage linens can find new life.

Vintage or antique tablecloths and other linens often have beautiful patterns and colors, but plenty of wear and tear from years of use. Recycle those treasured heirlooms in projects that bypass holes, stains, faded spots, and other hazards of antique fabrics.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn large pieces of undamaged fabric into pillow shams for your bed. Cut out the biggest pieces of your fabric with the least damage and set aside the remaining worn-out pieces. Stitch the sides inside-out, trim the edges, then slip over your bed pillows and stitch closed.

    • 2

For smaller pieces, try making smaller pillows. Cut your fabric into squares, or fold over inside-out then sew around the edges (leaving an open hole at the corner). Stuff, then stitch closed and use them as throw pillows on a bed or sofa.

    • 3

Use smaller pieces to make place mats and napkins. Cut to size, turn, then stitch the edges underneath (use a paper template to achieve a certain size if desired). Trim the edges if you want, then fold and display on your table.

    • 4

Long pieces like tablecloths can be cut to make table runners for dining or side tables. The edges can be stitched underneath and trimmed for neatness, with added ornaments like braiding, tassels, buttons, or embroidery at the corners.
