How to Apply Decorative Cording
Decorative cording ranges from simple to elaborate, rich or shabby, messy or neat. You can use it to dress up ornaments, lamps, clothes or sheets. Use these techniques to add an attractive finishing touch to your household accessories. Does this Spark an idea?

With a Glue Gun
-
1
Use a hot glue gun to apply decorative cording to ornaments, lampshades and other items that are not handled often. Apply a long, narrow line of glue to a 3- to 5-inch section of the cording, carefully keeping it to one side so that the glue does not show.
-
2
Place the cording where you want it and hold it there firmly for a minute until the glue is dry.
-
-
3
Repeat Steps 1 and 2, applying glue and holding it one section at a time until you are done. Trim at the end and add a small dot of glue to prevent fraying.
With Thread
-
4
To apply decorative cord onto fabric, such as a bedspread, for example, you can use a cording foot on your sewing machine. Attach the cording foot to the machine and place the cord into the foot.
-
5
As you sew, the cord moves with the fabric and the machine stitches it in place. You can see a demonstration on the Bernina website. See the Resources section for a link.
-
6
Apply a flat decorative cording onto fabric without a cording foot by pinning the cording in place and sewing over it with a matching thread. This is easiest with wide, flat decorative cording.
-
7
Attach wide cording to fabric, by hand-stitching it. Pin the cording in place.
-
8
Use small stitches to attach the cording to the fabric. You can hide your stitches by sewing through the center of the cording, but make sure that it doesn't make your cording fray.
