Everybody loves quilts, and there's something special about sleeping under a quilt that has been made with love by somebody you love. But some people are afraid to try quilting their finished pieced tops. Fortunately, there are some very easy ways to do this with a simple sewing machine. Here is one technique called "stitch-in-the-ditch."

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Stitch-in-the-Ditch Quilting

    • 1

Layer your backing, batting and quilt top. Baste or pin them together.

    • 2

Start in the middle of your quilt. Sew along the seams of the quilt top, stitching directly in the little "ditch" between the two pieces of fabric.

    • 3

Do not stitch along every seam in the quilt top. Choose the lines that will accent the pattern that you have chosen and create a pleasing quilting design.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use your hands to gently stretch the seams. This will open up the "ditch," and make it easier to follow.
