When you see decorated Birthday and Wedding cakes that are covered with the snow white icing and have piped borders; more than likely this is what is referred to as Decorator icing...

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crisco Shortening
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Water
  • Extract
  • Salt
  • Measuring Cup
  • Mixer
  • Spoons
  • Rubber Spatula
  • Bowl
  1. Step 1

Decorator Icing is similar in taste to Buttercream. The difference in the two is there is not any butter in the Decorator which allows this icing to be white. It is also easy to color this icing and will hold up better in hot weather than the Buttercream and also forms a crust like Buttercream.

  2. Step 2

    Recipe
    !/2 Cup of Crisco Shortening
4 Cups of Powdered Sugar (There are 4 cups in a 1 lb. box)
    1/4 Cup of Water
    1/2 Teaspoon Lemon Extract
    1/2 Teaspoon Almond Extract

  3. Step 3

    Directions:
Add the Crisco and powdered sugar in a mixing bowl. On medium speed, blend the 2 together. Gradually add the water. Continue mixing. Once the icing has been made, add the extracts. Beat until extracts are well blended. This icing will have a stiff consistency.
If you are going to crumb coat a cake, you will need to thin it down some. Add a teaspoon of water at a time and mix well until you get the consistency you need. If the icing pulls away from the cake as you are trying to crumb coat, you will know that it needs thinning some more.
Being there is only 1/2 of cup of Crisco in this recipe, you will need to make extra to have enough to crumb coat, ice and decorate an 8 or 9 inch cake.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can substitute other extracts and flavorings for the ones listed in the recipe.
  • Use clear extracts and flavorings if you want to keep the icing white.
  • Use quality ingredients when making cakes and frostings.
