The lanterns can be as intricate or simple as the designer desires. A basic table lantern version can be constructed with a wooden frame and translucent paper. The lamp provides a warm, diffused glow to a space, adding an Asian touch to any room. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the length of 16 standard-sized, sturdy chopsticks, ensuring they are equal in length. Use a small, fine-toothed saw to cut, if necessary.
-
2
Cut four pieces of translucent paper, such as tracing paper, into squares the length of the chopsticks.

3
Glue one chopstick to each edge of the paper, using hot glue or wood glue. Make sure the ends of each chopstick abut and form a right angle with the adjacent chopstick. Do this for each piece of paper. You will now have created four panels. Set aside the panels until the glue is completely dry.
-
4
Glue the panels together to form a box. Allow glue to dry completely.

5
Place tea candle in votive candle holder and light. If the flame is above the rim of the votive, blow out flame, trim the wick and relight.

6
Place the Shoji lantern over the candle so the candle is in the center of the shade.
