A double wedding ring quilt has a long and romantic history. This is a quilt pattern that has stood the test of time. If you look back through the generations of quilting in the United States, you will find that the double wedding ring quilt has stayed a popular quilt through the years.

One reason for the popularity of this quilt is that it can be made with very small pieces of fabric to create a quilt with a scrappy design. This was helpful for quilters during periods of economic hardship.

If you have quilting experience, a double wedding ring quilt might be a challenging project to try. Learn how to choose fabrics for a double wedding ring quilt and plan your next beautiful quilt. The instructions that follow will show you how to make one 12-inch block that can be used to create an entire quilt top.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 13-inch square of light background cotton fabric Six 3-by-10-inch strips of colorful cotton fabric (wedding rings) Two 4-inch squares of colorful cotton fabric (corner squares)
  1. Step 1

Choose a light background fabric for the foundation of the quilt block. The double wedding ring is created by contrasting the colors of the rings with the light background fabric, so it is important that your background fabric be light in color. Select either a solid fabric or a fabric with a very muted pattern.

  2. Step 2

Decide your color scheme for the wedding ring portion of the quilt. You could use fabrics of all different colors and patterns, or you could choose to use fabrics of certain colors.

If you choose fabrics of all different colors and patterns, you will have a quilt with a scrappy look. This is a popular quilt, because it is easy to make. Little planning is involved with this kind of quilt.

If you choose fabrics of a certain color family, you should vary the patterns of fabric. You can also vary the lightness and darkness of the fabrics and mix them up as you create the wedding rings. Place lighter fabrics beside darker fabrics and mix up the patterns to create interesting wedding rings.

  3. Step 3

Select different fabrics to use for the corner squares. These fabrics should not be fabrics that were also used for the wedding rings. Often these fabrics are bolder and brighter than the wedding ring fabrics.
