How to Make Crib Bedding

How to Make Crib Bedding thumbnail
Enjoy crib bedding you make yourself. Do not keep stuffed animals in a newborns crib. Remove after taking photos.

Crib bedding can be quite costly. For such tiny sheets and blankets you will pay an arm and a leg. Home made items are always made for less. You can make your own crib bedding for a fraction of the price. Fabric comes in adorable baby patterns and in a wide variety of colors. You will be able to take pride in knowing you made it for your darling little one each time you lay them down.

Measure two pieces of printed fabric to be 38" by 56". Measure a piece of quilt batting to the same size. Once cut to size, layer the three pieces together by placing the quilt batting in the middle of the two pieces of fabric which have their printed sides facing outward. Fold the first side in half, covering the batting, and sew using the sewing machine. Do the same for the other side and for each end. To finish off, and to add an extra touch, edge with satin ribbon or lace. Use 1" satin ribbon for boys by folding the ribbon in half and placing along the edge then stitching into place. Do this for both side and end edges. 1/2" will be seen on each side of the comforter. For girls ,attach lace to the top of the comforter by stitching it into place along the edges, all the way around.

To make a dust ruffle begin with the flat sheet. Trim the edges using sharp scissors to make it the exact size of the crib mattress, 28" wide by 52" long. Choose a print of fabric or a solid color fabric that blends well with the other fabrics you will be using. Measure strips, ten inches wide by 100" long. The strip should be all one piece. Use the sewing machine to sew the fabric to the sheet by placing the edges of each together, right sides in. Fold over 1/2" and sew using the sewing machine, pleating by 1/2" every four inches. Once done, trim any excess fabric, hem that edge and take a look. Your dust ruffle will have slight pleats which add a ruffled look.

To make a bumper pad measure out, and cut four strips of matching fabric to be 53" long, and four that are 29" long. Measure and cut out two pieces of batting that are 53" long, and then two that are 29" long. All pieces should be eight inches in height. Put sides and ends together by placing batting between two matching pieces of fabric, pattern sides facing out. Fold edges down in half on the top, covering the batting, and use your sewing machine to stitch 1/4" in from the edge. Do the same for the bottom edges, folding up and in half. Do the same for the end pieces. Attach the end of each side piece to the end of each end piece using the sewing machine. Attach six 12" ties per side, three on the top, and three directly under them on the bottom. Then attach four on each end, two at the top and two directly under them at the bottom. Fold each tie in half before attaching to make two ties that are 6" long. Use the ties to secure the bumper pad to the crib rails.

To make a crib sized pillow measure two pieces of coordinating fabric to be 10" by 8". Cut to size and place the two pieces together pattern sides in. Fold each edge over half an inch and use the sewing machine to stitch the sides, all of one end, and all but 3" of the second end. Use the 3" opening to turn the pillowcase right side out. Insert the pillow stuffing until fluffy and then fold the open edges under 1/2" and finish sewing. To make pillow cases for the pillow measure and cut two pieces of matching fabric to be 12" long by 10" wide. Place together pattern sides in, fold fabric over 1/2", and sew both sides. Then sew one of the ends closed. Turn right side out. Fold the edges of the open end under 1/2" and hem. Do not sew together. The open end remains open and is where the pillow is inserted.

Once the comforter, the dust ruffle, the bumper pad and the pillow have all been completed, the only thing that is left to do is add the fresh fitted sheet to the mattress and put it all together. Place the dust ruffle under the crib mattress and let it hang. Replace the mattress into the crib and add the bumper pad, making sure to tightly secure with the ties. Add the comforter and lastly the pillow. You are done. Once everything is in place, you can lay the baby down and adore the crib bedding you have made.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your time. If you do not have a sewing machine, this project can be done by hand with a needle and matching thread.

  • Use care and caution when operating a sewing machine and using sharp scissors to avoid injury. Pillows and comforters can be a suffocation threat to any baby under six months of age. Do not use for newborns.
