How to Hook Up a Washer & Dryer

Having a washer and dryer in your home is very convenient and is much better than having to run to a laundromat every week. Houses usually have connections already prepared in the laundry room, or sometimes in the garage or the basement. With these connections, you will be able to hook up a washer and dryer easily, which will take no more than 30 minutes of your time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the washer and dryer in the area with the connections for them. The connections should consist of two water connections and standpipe for the washer and a vent hole for the dryer, along with plugs for both machines. Make sure that the washer and dryer are level. Use a level to check this and adjust the legs under the machines until they are level.

    • 2

Attach the washer first. There will be two black hoses on the back of the washer that will need to connect to hot and cold water valves in the wall. Each hose will have an H or C above it on the back of the washing machine. Connect the correct hose with the correct water pipe in the wall. Make sure the connections are secure to avoid leakage at the valve.

    • 3

Notice the standpipe. This will be an opening facing upward next to the hot and cold water connections in the wall. This is where the drain hose will need to be inserted in order for the washing machine to drain the water out of the machine. The washing machine will come with its own drain hose, and it should be at least 2 inches in diameter. You can connect the standpipe and drain hose using duct tape if desired to make sure that the hose doesn't move, but simply placing the end of the hose inside the standpipe should be fine.

Place the dryer vent onto the back of the dryer. There will be a hole on the back of the dryer where the vent will need to go. The vent will come with the new dryer. Use a vent clamp. This clamp will go over the vent and the hole in order to attach the vent to the back of the dryer.

    • 5

Find the hole in the wall behind the dryer where the other end of the vent will go. Place the vent over the hole and use another vent clamp to hold it in place.

    • 6

Plug in the washer and dryer. Check the level of both machines again and make the proper adjustments as needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are hooking up a new washer and dryer in an old home, be sure that you have enough voltage throughout your home to be able to handle what the machines may require. Most newer machines will carry a 220 voltage and will need additional electric capacity added to the home, which will require an electrician.
