How to Clean a Moldy Refrigerator
Mold from rotting food can spread over a refrigerator's interior and shelves. Left as is, this is at the least unsightly and at the worst it is unsanitary. Although removing all the old food and giving the refrigerator a good cleaning is a bit of a chore, this may not take as much time as you think. In addition, the only cleaning supplies and cleaners you'll need can be easily found already in your home or at your local grocery store. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- White vinegar
- Water
- Two plastic buckets
- Sponges
- Towels
- Dish washing detergent
- Fan

Fill the kitchen sink with warm water and dish detergent. Remove any shelves that are removable and place them in or near the sink to soak.

Mix liquid dish washing detergent and water in a plastic bucket. Dip a sponge in the bucket and scrub down the inside of the refrigerator. Remove as much visible mold and grime as you can.

Mix equal parts of white vinegar and warm water in a clean plastic bucket. Place clean sponges in this solution and wipe out the inside of the refrigerator.

Dry all interior areas, using a towel. Now you can start scrubbing the shelves that have been soaking. Use soapy water followed by the vinegar solution on them.

Wipe the shelves dry. Place the clean shelves back into the refrigerator.

Tips & Warnings
If shelves are too big to soak in the sink, soak them in the bathtub. You can also use a weak solution of bleach and water to clean your refrigerator---just be sure not to mix this with any ammonia based cleaners.
Mold can cause allergic reactions for some people. If the refrigerator is very moldy, wear protective gloves and a face mask.
