An outdoor fireplace adds a romantic element to a patio. It can also extend the use of the patio as evenings get cooler in the autumn. The patio should be designed with your comfort and the comfort of your guests in mind. Include amenities that will make entertaining or just relaxing simple. Designing a fireplace patio can be an inexpensive project or an elaborate process that includes a full-scale outdoor kitchen. Start with these basics to design an outdoor fireplace patio.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tiles
  • Seating
  • Lighting
  • Mini-fridge
  • Awning
  • Insect control
  1. Step 1

Make the fire element the focus of the patio. Use decorative fireproof tiles or bricks around the fireplace to ensure safety and to draw attention to it.

  2. Step 2

Arrange comfortable seating, including chairs and lounges. Place side tables and coffee tables within reach for drinks and snacks.

  3. Step 3

String party lights, use Tiki torches or set candles in windproof holders around the patio.

  4. Step 4

Create a bar area in a section of the patio that's protected from the elements. Furnish it with a mini-fridge, a counter for snack preparation and a small sink.

  5. Step 5

Install a retractable awning to use when the weather is inclement. Or build a lanai or pergola over the patio.

  6. Step 6

Use insect control in areas where pests are a problem. Options range from citronella candles to elaborate bug-zapping lights and natural, eco-friendly options.

  7. Step 7

Set a log holder or wood bin next to the fireplace if it's wood burning to save trips to the woodpile. Buy an attractive and practical set of fireplace accessories.

  8. Step 8

Consider buying a patio heater to augment the fireplace's output and extend your use of the patio.
