How to Paint Hard Plastic Containers

The easiest way to redecorate and liven up a room is to throw a coat of paint on the walls. But what if your storage containers don't match your room's new look? Painting hard plastic can be a challenge, especially when it comes to containers. Most paint isn't made for plastic material, so the new paint on the containers can chip or peel from use.
If you want a perfect finish that won't chip or peel with wear and tear, vinyl dye is a must have product when painting hard plastic containers. The plastic absorbs the paint for a permanent finish and requires no sanding or primer.

Things You'll Need

• Dish detergent
• Sink
• Cardboard
• Vinyl dye

Instructions

1. Wash the plastic container thoroughly with a liquid dish detergent. Rinse and either allow the container to air dry or dry it off with a dish towel.

2. Take the dry container outside and set it on a piece of cardboard so you will not stain the grass or pavement.

3. Spray a coat of vinyl dye onto the container, covering the entire surface with the paint.

4. Allow the vinyl dye to dry and then apply one to two more coats of paint to the container until the original color no longer shows through.

• Do not use vinyl dye indoors as it's toxic and can be harmful if inhaled or ingested.
