Make Night Light Lamp Shades

Night lights are an important part of any child's room. They are a great source of gentle light that allows your kid to avoid tripping over furniture and toys when heading to the bathroom in the middle of the night. And, of course, they protect kids from the scary darkness and all the monsters and hobgoblins hiding within. Making your own custom nightlight is a snap, and with a prefab frame, it only takes minutes to set up. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Night light lamp shade frame

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the paper for your lamp shade. You can use wallpaper, preprinted stationery or even print out a pattern on your color printer.

Make sure to hold the paper up to lamp light to see what it will look like when it's illuminated.

    • 2

Lay the paper down and place the frame on its side on top of the paper (see Resources for lamp frames). Trace the outline of the frame with the pencil.

    • 3

Cut the traced shape out of the paper.

    • 4

Apply the glue or tape to the frame's edges. Put one edge of the frame to the edge of the paper and roll the frame from one end of the paper to the other; this will affix the paper to the frame.

    • 5

Create strips with the linen tape or fabric tape to fit on the top and bottom edges of the frame. Put glue on the strips with the sponge or paintbrush.

    • 6

Affix the strips to the top and bottom of the frame -- each strip should cover the front edge of the frame -- then fold over to cover the back edge of the frame.

    • 7

Slide a ruler over the trim while the glue is drying to smooth out the material. Let the trim dry completely.

    • 8

Attach the nightlight to the frame, plug it in and enjoy.
