Want a fun and easy way to add some color to your outdoor spaces and have some fresh fruits, veggies and herbs for summer? It only takes a little time and effort to start a simple container garden. Flowers aren't the only things you can grow in pots! There is an abundance of flowers, vegetables, herbs, fruits and foliage that thrive in containers.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Your deck, porch or terrace is the perfect spot for your potted outdoor garden. Begin with just one or two simple terra cotta pots. (These are the most economical, but of course you can go as ornate and expensive as you want with your containers.) Keep in mind that a grouping of varying heights and odd numbers looks best. Choose your own favorite style, and consider using a non toxic paint to decorate plain pots yourself.

  2. Step 2

There are so many plants to choose from! Make a little list of your favorites, and plant one or two per weekend until you have a full garden. For some fresh veggies and herbs all summer, choose a tall plant to anchor each pot (like a cherry tomato or shorter variety of corn) and surround it with some leafy greens or herbs (spinach, basil and oregano).

  3. Step 3

You can even add some geraniums for floral color, and marigolds will keep the bad bugs away! Plant your selections in good quality potting soil and keep them watered. If you prefer fruits for your anchor height, use a dwarf cherry or blueberry and plant some strawberries around the base.

  4. Step 4

What if you just want to add color and interest to your outdoor spaces? Ornamental grasses are a great choice. Pair them with some colorful floral selections. White flowers with green ornamental grasses also make a great combination. Find your style and go for it! It's easy!
