Clean Nozzles on an Epson Printer

Epson printers have their print head nozzles built directly into the printer instead of into the disposable ink cartridges. These print heads can become clogged over time, especially if you are using ink refill kits instead of replacing the cartridges with new ones. To clean the nozzles, you will need to open up the printer and physically remove the print head.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Windex or other cleaning solution

Instructions

    • 1

Power on the Epson printer and lift open the top case. Wait for the ink carriage to slide from the right into view and then unplug the power cable from the electrical wall outlet.

    • 2

Remove the screws holding the top half of the printer into place, or pull it off entirely if your Epson model does not have enough room for maneuvering with the top open.

    • 3

Bend back the plastic tabs that hold the plastic covers into place over the ink carriage. Pull the plastic covers off of the carriage and then set them aside. Pull off the plastic tabs on the sides of the carriage.

    • 4

Pull off the two plastic clips that hold the ribbon cable into place that are connected to the carriage. Disconnect the cable by grabbing both sides of the connector and then gently lift it straight up. Set the cable aside.

    • 5

Remove the screw (if necessary) that holds down the plastic piece that was connected to the cable. Remove the plastic piece so that you can see the rectangular print head.

    • 6

Grab both ends of the print head and carefully pull it out of the printer. Spray some Windex on a soft cloth or sponge and carefully wipe the print head down. Let it sit for a few minutes to dry and then place it back in the printer. Re-assemble the printer and attempt to print again.

Tips & Warnings

  • For especially tough clogs, you may want to actually soak the print head in Windex overnight, dry it off completely and then connect it back into the printer.

  • Taking apart your printer to clean the nozzles will void the warranty provided by Epson.
