How to Crochet Knee High Stockings
Crocheting is a relaxing yarn craft that can often produce results faster than knitting can. Crocheted knee high stockings can be comfortable and a project that can be done while watching television or relaxing at home.

1
Choose a light yarn for your crocheting project. Thick yarn will produce a thicker stocking that will be too stiff to wear. The lighter the weight of the yarn, the lighter the sock will be, but it will also make the project more time intensive. Keep this in mind when buying your yarn.

2
Check the back of your yarn to see what kind of hook you will need. Lighter weight yarns will generally need a smaller hook. Going up a size or two larger than the recommended hook will keep your stitches loose and flexible.

3
Start a chain stitch that is wide enough to fit around the widest part of your thigh. When you have done this, insert your hook into the first stitch you created and single-crochet (SC) them together. You should now have a chain stitch loop.
-
4
SC three times to create a small chain, and stick your hook in through the chain stitch loop you created. Double-crochet (DC) around the rest of the sock using the same number of DC stitches for each row. Work your way around using the DC stitch until you have created a tube that reaches from your knee to your toes.
-
5
Try the stocking on as you go to feel out any tight or loose points. Add or subtract any stitches to adjust the sock's width as needed.
-
6
When your stocking has reached the length you desire and falls a little past your toes, cut and tie off the yarn. Turn the bottom edge in. Pin and sew the crocheted ends together.
-
7
Measure a piece of elastic around your leg where you want the stocking to sit. Cut the elastic where it feels tight but not uncomfortable. This elastic is going to hold your stocking up
-
8
Fold over and sew together 1 inch of the top of the tube using your needle and thread. Leave about an inch of the hem open. Pin a safety pin to your elastic, and push it through the opening you've left.
-
9
Push the elastic through the hole, and sew the two ends of the elastic together. Sew up the hem opening, and wear your stocking.

Tips & Warnings
This is a basic stocking pattern. Usually stockings are made through a combination of knitting and crocheting. See the Resources below for a few patterns that combine the two.
