Things You'll Need:
- 3 yards exterior fabric
- 3 yards cotton or muslin backing fabric
- Walking foot for a sewing machine
- Thread
- Sewing needle
- Machine quilting thread in complimentary color to exterior fabric
- Sewing machine
- Sewing scissors
- Cutting table
- Thin quilt batting
-
Step 1
Measure the length of the table you want to place your runner on. Add 36 inches to this length. Decide how much of the table you want the runner to cover, as it runs the length of the table. This will be the width of your runner. Write these measurements down.
-
Step 2
Iron your exterior and backing fabric. Using a tailor's chalk and a straight ruler, measure the size of your runner. Cut out your pieces, making a 1-inch seam allowance all the way around your drawn runner shape. Cut out one piece of batting that measures the dimensions of your runner, plus a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
-
Step 3
Create a quilt sandwich. Fold the edges of the backing fabric and exterior fabric 1/2 inch under to the wrong side. Fold to form creases. Place the backing fabric on your table with the right side facing down so you see the folds. Place the batting layer on top, centering it on top of the backing fabric. There should be a 1/2-inch border of backing showing all around the batting.
-
Step 4
Lay the exterior fabric on top with the right side facing you so that the edges line up with the backing. Draw the lines you want to quilt on your runner with tailor's chalk. Use a ruler to make your lines consistent and straight. Baste the layers together in lines about 2 to 3 inches apart. Check the edges of the layers to make sure they still match. Remove the pins.
-
Step 5
Replace the standard foot on your sewing machine with a walking foot. Thread the machine with machine quilting thread. Quilt your runner, starting in the center and working your way outward.
Take off the walking foot when you are finished quilting, and replace with your conventional foot. Sew around the perimeter of your runner, using a 3/8-inch seam allowance.
