Deck wood is not immune from mildew problems unless you know how to cure the mildew problems and keep the deck from succumbing to the mildew in the first place. Untreated decks will at some point, show signs of mildew. You can easily stop the mildew and make sure that it does not return for a couple of years. It takes about two days to cure deck mildew problems. This should be done in the spring of the year. Even if you do not have a mildew problem, you can use these steps to prevent mildew from growing.
Things You'll Need
- Deck wash
- Deck sealer
- Scrub brush
- Hose hooked up to water
Wait until a warm, dry day to wash the deck. You will need to have two dry and warm days. Prep the deck by removing all furniture and inspect for any nails or screws that may have popped up. Fix these spots as a safe measure.
Use the hose to wet the deck down. Take the brush and dip it into the deck wash solution. The entire deck must be washed with this solution. This includes the sides and railings. May sure that you get every inch of the deck. The deck wash gets rid of the mildew.
Use the hose to rinse the deck wash off the wood deck. Then allow the deck to dry for an entire day. This is why it is important to have two dry days in a row to do this project.
Feel the deck the next day to make sure that all the areas are dry. Then get the paintbrush and deck sealer. You will use the sealer and the paintbrush just as you would if you were painting a wall or something. Apply the deck sealer to the entire deck, including the sides and the railings.
Allow the deck sealant to dry for an entire day before placing any furniture on it or walking on it. The sealant will last for one to two years, if not longer, depending on your location and weather conditions.
Tips & Warnings
- Use a paintbrush you can throw away.
- Never walk on the sealer until it is dry. Only do this project if the air is warm and there is no rain predicted for two days at least.
