How to Make a Basketball Jersey Cake

If you are looking for a creative solution for a birthday party or March Madness celebration, try your hand at making a basketball jersey-shaped cake. All you need is a box of cake mix and a little creativity. This cake is not as difficult to make as other shaped cakes.

Things You'll Need

• 1 box of cake mix, any flavor
• Egg
• Oil
• Water
• 13-by-9-inch baking pan
• Oven
• Cooling rack
• Serving plate
• Knife
• Picture of favorite basketball team's jersey
• 2 cans of white icing
• Food coloring
• Spatula
• Pastry bag with writing tip

Instructions

1. Combine the cake mix, egg, oil and water required by the instructions on the box.

2. Pour the cake batter into the baking pan and bake according to package directions, until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.

3. Let the cake cool completely, following the directions on the box. When it's cool, turn it out onto the serving platter.

4. 

   Cut the cake into the shape of a basketball jersey by cutting a shallow U shape into the top narrow side of the cake. Be sure to leave 1½ inches on both sides of the U shape to resemble sleeves.

5. Look at the picture of your favorite team's jersey. Mix the food coloring into one can of the white cake icing until you achieve the color of the shirt.

6. With the spatula, spread the colored icing over the cake.

7. Stir food coloring into the second can of white icing until you reach the accent colors of the jersey.

8. Scoop the second batch of tinted icing into the pastry bag that has been fitted with a writing tip.

9. Using the pastry bag, pipe the icing onto the cake to match the accent lines in the picture of the basketball jersey. The cake is now ready to serve.
