How to Remove Spray Starch From Areas Around an Ironing Board

Louise Harding

Spray starch is a handy laundry helper and sometimes a wardrobe necessity, but it can wreck havoc with the areas surrounding the ironing board. Faultless brand starch started selling way back in 1897. No doubt, women then were cleaning the sticky residue from their ironing boards and flooring underneath as well. Removing spray starch is simple, but requires a lot of elbow grease and products commonly found in the household kitchen. Roll up those sleeves, and find your baking soda and let the cleaning begin.

  1. Fill the bucket with warm water and enough dish detergent to create soapy suds.

  2. Using the sponge, scrub the floor where the starch is adhered in a circular motion

  3. Sprinkle baking soda onto the wet surface of the floor and create a baking soda paste over the sticky area.

  4. Using the scrub brush, in a circular motion, scrub the baking soda into the areas marred by the starch. The abrasion of the baking soda will loosen the dried spray starch.

  5. Rinse the scrub brush in the sudsy water in the bucket and wipe the baking soda residue up with the sponge. Rinse and repeat with the sponge if necessary.

  6. Towel the floor dry.
