How to Clean Broken Glass Off Carpet

Save

Broken glass on your carpet will not only send shivers down your spine, but could also send painful slivers up your bare feet. If it is not cleaned up properly, tiny slivers of glass could remain embedded deep in the fibers only to resurface months or even years later. If you had the misfortune to break a compact fluorescent bulb, then you must also worry about cleaning up the dangerous mercury that has been released. Below you will find instructions on how to clean both problems.

Things You'll Need

  • Gloves
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Duct tape
  • Plastic bag or glass jar
  • Wearing thick gloves, pick up any large pieces from the carpet.

  • Vacuum the area thoroughly.

  • Lay strips of duct tape in overlapping rows over the area at least 2 to 3 feet outside of the area where you think there may be glass.

  • Smooth out and press down on the tape before removing it.

  • If you still think there may be glass in the area, use a piece of fresh bread and press it down over the area or repeat Steps 2 through 4.

Cleaning up Glass from a Fluorescent Lightbulb

  • Because fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, they should be handled differently. Wait at least 15 minutes before doing anything. Open a window in the room and remove yourself, along with any children and pets, from the room. Also, turn off your central air conditioning or heating unit during this time.

  • Wearing gloves, pick up any large fragments and place them in a sealed plastic bag or glass jar with a lid.

  • Lay overlapping strips of duct tape in rows over the area at least 2 to 3 feet outside of the area where you think there may be glass. Smooth out and press down on the tape before removing it.

  • Fold the tape so the sticky sides are together and place into the plastic bag or glass jar with the other glass. Use a separate bag if necessary.

  • If necessary, vacuum the area. Immediately remove the vacuum bag and place it in a sealed plastic bag. If you have a canister vacuum, empty the canister into a plastic bag and seal it. Then wipe out the canister.
