How to Clean Antique Wool Rugs
Antique rugs and rugs made of wool both need gentle and special care during the cleaning process. A rug that is both antique and wool requires even more special care and gentle handling. Even so, antique wool rugs still get dirty and must be cleaned. And, the process is best done at home so you know the proper care is being taken not to damage something that is not easily replaced. Vacuum your rug gently and carefully to remove as much dust, loose soil and dirt as possible.

Take the rug into the back yard, patio or deck in the fresh air. It's best to keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.

Test a small area in the corner of the rug with Woolite to make sure the colors on the rug will not fade or run.

Spot clean the rug gently with Woolite mixed with cold water on a soft cloth to remove any stains.

Clean the entire rug gently with this mixture if the overall look is dirty or dingy.

Rinse away the soap with cold water. Spread the rug over the grass or over a wicker chair or wicker table. Make certain the rug is thoroughly dry before bringing it indoors. If the rug isn't dry by dusk, bring it indoors and spread it over two or three chairs where it will get air from both above and underneath.

Do not take antique rugs to dry cleaners because the chemicals and heat used will damage the fibers in the rug.
