How to Make a Taggies Blanket

Taggies blankets are wonderful sensory blankets for touch and exploration for a baby. They are meant to imitate the ribbon tags found on soft stuffed baby toys. The taggies blankets are soft and have tags of ribbon sewn around the edges. They are not large, allowing the baby to move and manipulate them quite easily. The taggies blanket is not hard to reproduce for your own baby and will provide the comfort and calm of a basic, much loved security blanket.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut two pieces of the soft fleece fabric, 14 inches square; this size will provide you with a finished taggies blanket that is 13 inches square, with the little taggies extending off the side.

    • 2

Measure and cut 16 pieces of ribbon, 6 inches long. To provide more interest for the baby, use multiple colors of ribbon in a variety of textures.

    • 3

Place one piece of soft fleece fabric on your work surface. If there is a wrong side and a right side to the fabric, the right side should be facing up. Measure and place a straight pin every 3-1/2 inches around all four sides of the soft fleece square. Fold one piece of ribbon in half matching the short ends. Lay the folded ribbon on the soft fleece square and match the raw ends of the ribbon with the raw edge of the soft fleece square. Pin with one of the marked straight pins. Continue to fold and pin the remaining ribbons. Place the remaining soft fleece square on top of the first fleece square with the right side down. Match the edges and pin.

    • 4

Sew a 1/2-inch seam allowance around all four sides of the taggies blanket. Leave a 3-inch opening between two ribbons for turning the taggies blanket right side out. Clip the corners of the taggies blanket and turn right side out through the 3-inch opening. Use your fingers to poke the inside corners of the taggies blanket out. Pin the 3-inch opening closed. Top stitch around all four sides of the taggies blanket a 1/4-inch from the edge. The 3-inch opening will be closed by the top stitching.
