How to Replace Drawer Glides

Save

Unfortunately, the little metal pieces that help your drawers to slide in and out do not last as long as the drawers. Most of the time, the damage comes from the glides getting bent by pushing down on the drawer while it is open. Once they are bent, it is very hard to bend them back and have them work very well. At that point the only thing left to do is replace them.

Things You'll Need

  • New drawer glides (the same type that you are taking out) Screwdriver Wood putty
  • Take the drawer out of the cabinet by pulling it toward you. Then tilt it up and lift. Check the glides to see if a screw just needs to be tightened or something is stuck in the track. If it is bent or broken, you will have to install new glides.

  • Unscrew the old glides from the drawer and the cabinet. Take both parts of one side of the glide with you to the store to make sure you purchase the correct one.

  • Fill the screw holes with wood putty where you took out the old glides. Allow the putty to dry well. Follow drying times on the can as different putty has different drying times.

  • Screw the new glides into the inside of the cabinet and the outside of the drawer where you took the old ones out. The wood putty should allow you to get the new screws in tight.

  • Put the drawer back into the cabinet.
