How to Crochet a Single Crochet Stitch

The single crochet stitch is used often in projects because it is a tight stitch. As a result, it is often used to create a base for projects or when a solid area is needed (as in sweaters or blankets). Here's how to do a single crochet stitch.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    If you have not already done so, crochet a chain.

  2. Step 2

    In the second chain from hook insert crochet hook.

    Move the crochet hook behind and to the right of the working strand of yarn.

    Pull the crochet hook down until the hook catches the yarn.

    Continue pulling down until hook comes through the loop. You will have two loops on your crochet hook.

    Move the hook behind and to the right of the yarn.

    Move the hook down until it catches the yarn strand.

    Pull through both loops on the hook. You have just made a single crochet stitch.

    Insert hook into the next stitch. Repeat steps 3-9 until you reach the end of the row.

  10. Step 10

    When the end of a row is reached, chain 1 to turn. Work the remaining rows by repeating Steps 9-10.
