Instructions

Select your fabric. If you choose a lighter weight fabric, you will need to use a middle to heavy weight interfacing for sturdiness. Heavier decorator fabrics do not require interfacing for this Buxton type organizer purse. Choose a coordinating lining fabric. You will need approximately 1 yard each of lining and outer fabric.

    • 2

Cut two 8-inch-by-12-inch rectangles from each lining and outer fabrics. Cut one 8-inch-by-1-inch panel of lining and outer fabric. Cut three 8-inch-by-8-inch squares from either fabric, as you choose. These will be the pockets on both the outside and flap of the organizer purse. Cut one strip of 4 inches by 45 inches for a bag strap. Iron on interfacing to each fabric piece if you are using it. Add organizer features by cutting two panels 8 inches by 24 inches and one 7 inches by 24 inches of either fabric.

Hem the three pocket panels with a one inch hem. Attach narrow strips of Velcro to the hem on each pocket. Position the pockets and pin or baste into place. The outer pockets should line up with the bottom and sides of the bag and the flap pocket with the bottom of the bag flap. Apply the opposite side of the Velcro to the outside of the bag and the inner piece of the flap. Sew together the front and back outers of the bag, the 8-inch-by-12-inch pieces. Attach the 8-inch-by-14-inch piece to the top of the back of the bag. Repeat with the bag lining, leaving a 3-inch gap for turning. Stitch across the bottom corners of the bag 1 inch from each corner. Stitch the strap lengthwise, press and topstitch. Pin into place on the outer of your new Buxton type organizer purse.

Place the bag and lining right sides together. Sew around the flap and edge of the bag. Turn right side out, press and top-stitch 1/8 inch from the edge of the bag flap and top. You have now completed the purse part of your organizer purse.

Apply heavyweight interfacing to both of the 8-inch-by-24-inch pieces and the 7-inch-by-24-inch panel. Hem the narrower panel with a 1-inch hem. Pin the narrower hemmed piece to one of the 8 inch by 24 pieces and sew right sides together to the remaining 8-inch-by-24-inch panel. Stitch dividing lines as needed in this long strip to create individual pockets. Roll up and place in your finished Buxton type organizer purse. This purse organizer can be used in any bag you already own and not just your new Buxton type bag.
