Things You'll Need:
- One or two pairs of jeans Scissors Measuring tape Seam ripper Sewing machine Thread to match jeans Straight pins Newspaper Pencil Iron and ironing board
-
Step 1
Put on the jeans that will become the jean skirt. Determine the length of your skirt and place a straight pin, horizontally, at this point. Remove the jeans. Line up the jean legs so that they are even. Cut the legs at the marked straight pin. This skirt pattern has no hem, so there is no need to add inches to the cut.
-
Step 2
Open the crotch and the inner legs seams of the jeans using the seam ripper. Fold under the raw edges of the seam and iron. One side of the leg seam will naturally fold under, the other side will have a darker shade of denim in the seam. Fold under and iron the width of the darker shade.
-
Step 3
Lay the newspaper on your work surface. Place the jeans on top of the newspaper. Trace the inside triangle of the legs. Remove the jeans. Cut the newspaper out an inch bigger than the traced triangle for a seam allowance.
-
Step 4
Open the seams of the cut off jean legs or, if they are not long enough, cut an open the seams of a second pair of jeans. Lay the triangle pattern on the open jean leg. Line the attached seam up with the top of the triangle and center bottom of the triangle and pin. Cut the triangle out. Cut another triangle out using the other jean leg.
-
Step 5
Place the jean skirt on your work surface. Slide one cut triangle into the triangle opening of the jean skirt with the right side up. Pin the ironed seam edge of the jean skirt triangle opening to the cut triangle seam allowance. Top stitch the triangle where pinned. Turn the skirt wrong side out and trim the excess from the seam. Turn right side out and cut 1/2 inch wide fringe, 2 to 4 inches long around the edge of the jean skirt. Wash and dry the jean skirt to fray the cut fringe.
