Make a Leprechaun Trap

Making a Leprechaun Trap for St. Patrick’s Day is a fun and creative craft-project for children to do. Why would you want to capture a leprechaun??? Well, to get his gold, of course!!! Legend has it, if you are able to capture a leprechaun, you can force him to give you his gold. My children have been trying for several years on St. Patrick's Day to capture a leprechaun, but they are such tricky little fellows that my children just end up with a little note saying “Hee Hee Hee, you missed me!” Of, this does not deter my children!!! It just makes them more determined. So here is how you can make your own Leprechaun Trap for St. Patrick's Day.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Empty Boxes
  • Empty Paper Tubes
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • string
  • netting
  • dowel or stick
  • paint
  • glitter, gems, beads
  • penny
  1. Step 1

Construct the Leprechaun Trap using empty boxes and tubes. This can be just a simple box or it can be several interconnected boxes and tubes. Please help you child with this part of the project, especially if it involves cutting.

  2. Step 2

Make a way to trap the leprechaun. Set up some type of trap in the box(es). Make sure that is a trap that will not injure the leprechaun. Never use a mouse trap or something like that!!! Two simple traps that will not injure the leprechaun are, one dropping a net on it, in other words rig it so when he takes the bait, the net will drop. The second is to prop a box on a stick and when the bait is disturbed then the stick falls making the box fall over the leprechaun.

  3. Step 3

Decorate the box. Make sure you decorate the box so it is enticing to the leprechaun. Leprechauns like shining objects so make sure you use a lot of glitter, beads and gemstones.

  4. Step 4

Bait your Leprechaun Trap. We always use a penny as bait and it obviously works since we always get a visit, but you could use other shiny objects if you would like.

  5. Step 5

Find a good place to leave the trap the night before St. Patrick's Day. Truly any flat surface will work.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you children understand it is extremely difficult to catch a leprechaun because they are so tricky. It’s no fun if they are too disappointed.
  • Again, make sure you don’t use a trap that could injure the little leprechaun!!!
