Designing your own perfume online allows you to have fun and get creative by creating perfume to your custom specifications. There are several companies that allow you to design and order your own perfume online. One company that is gaining fame for designing perfume online is "Scent Design," which the guide below uses.

Things You'll Need:

  • Creativity
  1. Step 1

Find a website that allows you to design your own perfume. "Scent Design" is the site used here but other companies also exist. Navigate your web browser to the "Scent Design" website. (See sources below) Look around the website for a few minutes to become accustomed with the many features of the website. Click on "How to Design a Fragrance" on the right-hand side menu of the website to briefly learn how to design your own perfume.

  2. Step 2

Research the available scents on the website. Click on "Fragrance List" on the right-hand side menu to get a description of each of the available scents and to get an idea of how they smell. Click on "Recipes and Blends" on the right-hand side menu to see what others are designing and to get an idea of what blends might or might not work. Click on "Suggestions and Tips" to get design advice from the company. Additional research may be done for many perfume scents by doing a search on fragrances on Google. Scent Design offers 50 base fragrances or scents, which equates to approximately 10 million different combinations. It is recommended that for your first few perfume attempts that the formula be kept simple lest some fragrances get lost inside of others.

  3. Step 3

Decide on the type of scents to use and create a well-balanced combination. It is not a good idea to mix certain scent types with others. Some types include woodsy, musky, citrus and floral. Woodsy and musky scents go well together, as do citrus and floral. Woodsy and musky do not usually go well with citrus but may go well with some florals. Stronger scents should be used in lesser quantities, if other weaker scents are also being used because they will be swallowed up or masked by the stronger ones. Adding just a touch of a stronger scent will allow it to be used with weaker scents used at full strength. Any scent with citrus, berries (raspberry and strawberry), spices (ginger and vanilla), mints (peppermint), flowers (jasmine), and musky scents (sandalwood) is very strong and should be used as just a touch of when used with weaker scents. Using two strong scents together will most likely cause a confusing scent with each battling for power but sometimes they work. Another option is to add two of one strong scent and one of another. Scents such as tea (green tea), some spices (thyme), and nuts (hazelnut) are weaker and can be used at full strength with other weaker scents without overpowering the other scents and blending well. Some examples of balanced combinations include a tropical combination (fern, cucumber, coconut, and a touch of citrus) and a tea combination (green tea, apple, and a touch of vanilla).

  4. Step 4

Design your fragrance. Click on "Design your Fragrance" at the top of the right-hand side menu to begin the design process. Choose the size of the fragrance oil that you want to create. The options are 1/3 ounce oil with a 3 fragrance blend or 1 ounce oil was a 5 fragrance blend. Choose a fragrance blend. The 1/3 ounce oil blend may contain 2 scents and 1 touch of a scent. The 1 ounce oil blend may contain 4 scents and 1 touch of a scent. Use the drop-down menus to select scents. Choosing two of the same scents means that the perfume gets a double dose of that scent, which is good for milder scents. Choosing a scent for a touch of a scent means that the perfume gets just a hint of that scent, which is good for very strong scents that might overpower other scents if given a stronger dose.

  5. Step 5

Choose the quantity. Enter the number of duplicate fragrance blends to order. Click the "Add to Basket" button to add this item to your order. More perfumes can be designed and added to the order by clicking on "Design your Fragrance" again. Continue on until all of your perfumes are ready to order.

  6. Step 6

Complete the order. Click "Check out" on the top right side of the page to proceed with your order. During the checkout process, you can either complete the order without an account or by creating a new account, which saves your past purchases, billing and shipping information for future orders. It is a good idea to create an account at this point, in case you come back for orders or to edit old ones.

Tips & Warnings
  • Scent Design has a very lenient return policy, so that, if the perfume you design is not exactly what you expected, it may be returned (following the site's specific directions) for another try---free of charge. Scent Design allows you to create a whole fragrance line of your own. Click on "Create a Fragrance Line" on the right-hand side menu for further information.
