How to Remove Iron-Ons

Iron-ons can be an easy, inexpensive way to personalize an item of clothing. Sometimes, however, it may be necessary to remove an iron-on. Unfortunately, removing an iron-on is not as simple as applying it, especially since the quality of the adhesive can vary from brand to brand. This method is quick and definitely worth a try.

How to Remove Iron-Ons

1. Cut a piece of light cardboard or heavy card stock large enough to cover the entire iron-on you want removed.

2. Lay the cardboard/paper flat against the iron-on and turn the material inside out so that the reverse side (directly behind the iron on) is facing up and the cardboard/card stock is directly underneath it.

3. Turn your iron to the highest (dry) setting and allow it to fully heat up.

4. Press firmly down on the material for at least 30 seconds in each area until the iron on is fully heated.

5. Test to see if the iron on is removable by peeling the cardboard back and seeing if it sticks to it while peeling away from the shirt. If it does not, repeat the process until it does.

6. Once the iron-on is removed, wash the item in hot water to get rid of any residual glue. Do not tumble dry the item until you are certain that all traces of adhesive are gone.

Tips & Warnings

• Removing an iron-on with this method can take up to five or six tries, so be patient.

• Some iron-ons cannot be removed or removed completely, depending on the brand as well as the material of the shirt. Before you use an iron-on in the first place, make sure that the item you are using is not irreplaceable in case you change your mind or if the iron-on doesn't work correctly once applied.
