It may come as a surprise to many that rose petals can be used to flavor sugar. Yet, there are numerous recipes that use rose sugar including breads, cookies, cakes, pies, puddings and other desserts. Traditionally roses are used in skin care, but studies have shown that they are also good for the digestion, which means that they can be eaten. However, care should be exercised when choosing rose petals for food recipes. Petals from roses that have been sprayed with pesticides or fertilized with chemical plant and rose food are toxic and should not be eaten. If you grow your own roses and are certain that they are chemical free, or if you purchase organic rose petals from a whole foods or health foods store, then you should try this recipe to make a flavorful and scented batch of rose petal sugar.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 Cups Fresh Rose Petals (tightly packed)
  • 2 Cups White Granulated Sugar
  • Colander
  • Waxed Paper
  • Baking/Cookie Sheet
  • Food Processor or Blender
  • Glass Airtight Container
  1. Step 1

Pre-heat oven at its lowest setting (140-170 degrees) for 10 minutes. Turn oven off but keep door closed to retain the heat.

  2. Step 2

Trim each rose petal by snipping off the white tip at the base. If you keep this on, the sugar will be bitter.

  3. Step 3

Place rose petals in a colander and rinse thoroughly with cold water to remove insects, dirt or other debris. Drain onto a paper towel and pat dry.

  4. Step 4

Put a sheet of waxed paper on a baking/cookie sheet and carefully arrange each petal side by side on the paper. Place in warmed oven for one to two hours until dry.

  5. Step 5

Add half of the sugar to a food processor along with the dehydrated roses. Mix until finely blended; then add remaining sugar and mix again.

  6. Step 6

Pour mixture into the airtight glass container and store in a dark place for one to two weeks. Shake the mixture each day to continue to blend the rose petals and sugar.
