How to Make Knot Blankets

There is nothing more cozy than a knot blanket. You can purchase fleece kits to make a blanket, but with a little imagination, you can create your own one-of-a-kind knotted fleece blanket. All you need is two pieces of your favorite fleece fabric and a good scissors. Start tying knots and you'll be finished your blanket before bedtime!

1. Choose two fabrics for your blanket. You can make your blanket solid colored (use two fleeces of the same color), two-toned (use two different colored fleeces), or patterned (use a patterned fleece for one side and a complementary color for the other side).Try to match fabrics of the same weight and make sure the width of the fabrics is the same, also.

2. Determine the size blanket you want to make. You can make a baby's blanket with two pieces of fabric, cut a yard long. For a child, sizes will vary, so measure the height of the child before cutting fleece. For an average adult, you will need two yards of each piece of fleece. If you want your blanket to cover an entire bed, measure the bed and add about 6 extra inches.

3. Lay the two pieces of fabric, one piece directly on top of the other piece, on a clean surface. When using a patterned piece of fleece, make sure that the design is facing out. Solid-colored fleece usually does not have a front or back, so it won't matter which side is facing out.

4. Use straight pins to pin the fabrics together. Make sure that the pins are at least 6 inches from the edge of the fleece. Two or three pins on each side of the blanket will be enough to keep the fleece aligned properly.

5. Cut a 4 by 4-inch square from each corner of the blanket. For a longer fringe, cut the squares 5 by 5 inches. Always cut through the two pieces of fabric at the same time so that your blanket will line up evenly.

6. Cut the strips that will be knotted. Along each side of the blanket, cut strips from the edge about four inches long and an inch wide, or five inches long for a longer fringed blanket. Always cut the strips through both pieces of the fleece. It's not necessary to be exact in measurements, but do try to cut uniform-sized strips.

7. Choose a corner where you will start knotting. Take the first top strip and its matching bottom strip and tie the strips into a double knot. Skip the next strips. Tie the third two strips into a knot. Tie every other pair of strips into a knot until you have finished a side. Start on the next side of the blanket, tying in the same fashion, until you have tied knots on all four sides of the blanket.

8. Turn the blanket over. Take the first pair of unknotted strips and tie them into a double knot. Continue knotting the strips until you have completed all four sides of the blanket. Using this method to tie the knots will give your blanket a balanced and even appearance.

Tips & Warnings

• To make your blanket even more personalized, embroider your name and a date in one of the corners. Be sure to follow this step BEFORE you knot the blanket! Wash your fleece knot blanket in cold water to keep it looking its best. Don't forget to remove the pins from your blanket before using!
• Fringe can be a choking hazard for babies. Use knot blankets with care.
