Did your child draw on the wall with crayons? Crayon stains can be difficult to remove from a wall if you don't know the proper technique. Crayons are made out of wax, which resists many cleaning methods. So how do you remove crayon from wallpaper? Keep reading to find out a simple yet effective way to clean crayon off the wall!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An Iron
  • A Brown Paper Lunch Bag (unwaxed)
  • Cornflour
  • Cleaning Solution (Any Surface Cleaner Will Work)
  • Scrub Brush
  1. Step 1

USE AN IRON TO MELT THE CRAYON ONTO A BLOTTING PAPER: The first step for cleaning crayon stains from the wall (in the case of wallpaper) involves using an iron on a no-steam setting. Place a plain brown paper lunch bag over the crayon marks on the wall and iron the area. This will remove the crayon from the wallpaper, transferring the wax onto the paper bag, which serves as a blotter. You must continually use a clean area on the paper bag or you risk transferring the crayon wax back onto the wall. This is the same basic method used to remove wax from clothing and fabric.

  2. Step 2

MIX A CRAYON CLEANING SOLUTION: Often, step 1 is the only step required to remove crayon wax from wallpaper. But in other cases, you may be left with a little bit of crayon stain still left on the wall. For this, you'll want to mix cornflour and a surface cleaner, creating a thick paste.

  3. Step 3

APPLY THE PASTE ONTO THE CRAYON MARKS ON THE WALL: Apply a generous amount of the paste onto what's left of the crayon stains on the wall. Allow the paste to dry completely before attempting the final step in the process remove the crayon stains from the wall.

  4. Step 4

BRUSH THE CORNFLOUR PASTE OFF THE WALL TO REMOVE CRAYON STAIN: To clean the rest of the crayon marks off the wall, use a scrub brush to gently brush the cornflour paste from the wall, using a circular motion. The appearance of the wall should be greatly improved when using this crayon stain removal method in conjunction with the wax blotting technique.

  5. Step 5

REPEAT STEPS 2-4 IF NECESSARY: Sometimes, in the case of light-colored wallpaper, you may need to repeat steps 2-4 a couple of times in order to completely remove the crayon from the wallpaper.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test a small spot on the wallpaper in a not-so-obvious area for colorfastness before applying the cornflour paste onto the wall.
  • The cornflour paste must be completely dried before you attempt to brush it off the wall during the final steps in this crayon removal technique. If you use a scrub brush before the paste and wallpaper has dried, it may damage the damp wallpaper!
